The Opalcutter

The Opalcutter

About Us

The Opalcutter in Montville is the work of Barbara Lamont who has been involved in the opal industry for over 40 years as a miner, cutter-polisher and most significantly a designer of hand-made opal jewellery.

For over 27 years Barbara was active in Coober Pedy (SA) where the ‘The Opalcutter’ shop was started. From 2004 till late 2020 she was mining on the ‘Koroit’ opal field, outside Cunnamulla in western Queensland.

While in Coober Pedy Barbara started working with German master goldsmith Regine Maeckle who had come out for a life change. Regine handcrafts all the opal and gem jewellery. They design and produce unique ‘one-off’ pieces, so you buy direct from the miner, cutter and manufacturer. If you have a piece of opal or other gem you like to have they would love to design and make a special piece for you!

Since 2012 ‘The Opalcutter’ shop has been in the ‘Pottery Building’ on the Main Street of Montville.

Opal is still our passion and we also show a range of jewellery produced by specialist small scale designers and manufacturers.

To fit in with the jewellery, the shop also has a range of bright pottery handmade by specialist artisans in Cape Town and paintings from Montville artists.

In the shop you can see and more importantly discuss the jewellery with her and her husband Edi Heide, a qualified gemologist.
